What to follow when buying furniture

When furnishing an apartment and buying new furniture, we try to buy the most important pieces from proven sellers. That way we are sure to get other accessories or equipment in the same design and style later on.

Large furniture retailers usually don't have a problem with complaints. How to recognize a quality manufacturer? Precisely in order to avoid plagiarism, some large manufacturers approach the clear identification of their products. For example, they always provide a hologram on the back, which cannot be easily imitated or removed. This is the only way we can be sure that we are buying quality with a clear guarantee.

We will focus on a favorable ratio between price and quality, i.e. on the long life of the furniture. In this context, natural materials lead the way. The price of furniture also depends on the design and reputation of the manufacturer.

Seats

Seats, sofas and armchairs are among the most used pieces of furniture.

When choosing a sofa, we take into account whether it can be folded out so that you can occasionally sleep on it, whether it has storage space, or whether it is reclining, straight or corner.

The choice of material used and the possibility of cleaning and maintenance are equally important. Comfort is decisive, we will definitely try how it sits or lies in it.

Functionality is an essential parameter. In the case of more demanding sets, we will also check how complex the unfolding mechanism is, how accessible the storage space is, or how the armrests and backrests are adjusted.

We will check the structural strength, stability and the materials used, which determine the durability of the seat. Beware of low-quality polyurethane foam or foam latex with high permanent deformation. Also insufficient connection of the individual layers of the material composition.

The quality of the cover and the execution of the upholstery work - it is true that the fewer seams there are on the seat, the greater the risk of deformation of the cover. The high-quality covering fabric is strong, has a high density and good maintenance properties, we will check the leather for any defects in the materials.

Seams - the stitches should be even with the use of high-quality threads so that the fabric does not fray and tear, it is also a mistake not to sew the seams.

We carefully measure the overall dimensions of the seating furniture, the height and depth of the seat, the area of the seat and the inclination of the backrests.

The most commonly used covers include cotton, microfiber, chenille, microplush, ECO leather and natural leather.

Wardrobes

Wardrobes are used in the hall, they are also necessary in the bedroom or children's room. What should not be forgotten when choosing them? We will narrow down the choice of material to laminate and solid wood. Each of them has its pros and cons.

Lamino is a cheaper material, available in a whole range of single-color designs and wood decors, it has a very hard and easy-to-maintain surface, it is more resistant to damage. Solid wood is more expensive, has visible annual rings, each piece of furniture is an original wood structure and is easier to repair than laminate. But it is more demanding for regular maintenance and has a long service life.

Quality fittings, hinges and handles are also important, as poor quality is the first to show. Opening drawers every day requires high-quality sliding mechanisms. We will also check the possibility of attaching the cabinets to each other and to the wall. We take into account the unevenness of the floor and the load on the cabinet. The higher the furniture, the worse its stability, so we think in advance about access to tall cabinets.

We first carefully measure the selected space for the cabinet. And not only the height and width, but also the depth of the cabinet. For the built-in wardrobe, we count on a margin for unevenness of the wall. The cabinet should not be in the immediate vicinity of heating elements. Be careful not to obstruct doors and windows near the cabinet! For sufficient ventilation and control, the cabinet should also be accessible from the side.

Freestanding and built-in wardrobes must have enough space to store clothes and things that we will store. A free-standing cabinet should be stable, lockable, safe in its design and practical in its internal arrangement.

Beds

We spend up to 1/3 of our lives in bed. During sleep, it regenerates up to 90% of mental and physical strength. Our body appreciates a quality bed, bed frame and mattress.

The bed frame must be stable, it should not creak or wobble, the length of the bed is governed by the height of the person sleeping +20-30 cm more. The width must be at least 80 cm, but 90 or 100 cm provides more comfort. The standard dimensions of a single bed are 90 x 200 cm, double beds 140 x 200, 160 x 200 or 180 x 200 cm.

The bed should also have sufficient height - at least 30 cm above the floor, the ideal height is 40 to 50 cm, for older and less mobile people up to 60 cm. The forehead near the head protects us from drafts, it can be leaned against, the pillow does not fall thanks to it. At the foot of the bed is not so important.

What to watch out for
Opening cabinets - in addition to the depth of the cabinet, we also expect its doors to be fully open. Access to 3/4 of the open door is not enough.
For furniture under the window, we check its height, even a difference of a few millimeters can be the reason for not opening the window. We will keep a reserve for the possible support of the legs of the chest of drawers or the table.
Dining chairs or a corner should have a minimum distance of 45 cm from the wall, ideally 60 cm, otherwise sitting at the table will be complicated.
A coffee table cannot be done without measuring the height of the seat or sofa, so that its storage surface is not too low or high.

The grid supports the mattress, allows it to ventilate and supports it in the frame. The slatted grate is the most suitable, the classic wooden grate is a bit harder, but also flexible. There are adjustable grates to choose from, which are especially appreciated by elderly or sick people.

Mattress – the mattress should be changed regularly, approximately every 5 to 10 years. Why? The main role is played by hygienic aspects (mites, fungi and other microorganisms), but also by changes in body weight during life. When choosing, we are guided by our weight and insist on documenting the load-bearing capacity of the mattress.

We buy from the seller, who shows us the cross-section of the mattress and explains its principle and construction. We will try the mattress to make sure it is neither too soft nor too hard for us. A mattress that can be used from both sides has a longer lifespan. A high-quality mattress is made of high-quality and dense materials, which is why its weight is higher and it has a longer warranty. We check exactly what the warranty covers.

Kitchen lines

The kitchen should be a purposefully arranged room where the whole family will feel comfortable. A key role is played by the kitchen unit, which should harmonize well with the overall layout of the kitchen. When choosing it, it depends on how much time we want to spend in the kitchen and whether it will be used for other purposes besides cooking.

The line can be made of more expensive solid wood, cheaper laminate has also proven itself. In terms of ergonomics, the triangle between the stove, refrigerator and sink pays off. We will also consider the number of drawers, cabinets and shelves.

The washing zone usually includes not only the sink, but also the dishwasher and the trash can in the cabinet under the sink. We should know whether the sink will be placed in the worktop or on it, how deep it will be and what material it is made of.

The worktop is the most loaded part of the kitchen unit, so it is not worth saving on it. It must be resistant to water, different temperatures and scratches and strong enough. Its correct height is important.

More expensive materials include granite or marble, natural wood, stainless steel or composite. Laminate boards are also popular, the advantages of which include low price and easy maintenance.

When equipping the kitchen, we also deal with appliances - either free-standing or built-in.
