How to prepare the seed for sowing

Thoroughly remove the pulp from the well-ripened fruit before sowing: it goes well with a brush under running water. You can carefully remove the stiff cover. It works best if you let the stone swell in lukewarm water for about two hours and then carefully open it in the seam with a sharp knife. Inside is a fairly large core that you must not damage because it will not germinate.

How to plant a mango: Choose the right substrate

Use a coconut substrate for sowing, as it is neither acidic nor alkaline and does not contain manganese-free calcium. Fill a sufficiently large container with the substrate and fill the seed so that it is about three centimeters below the surface. Keep the substrate moist but not soaked throughout the germination period. The temperature should be between 25 and 30 ° C. Under these conditions, the mango germinates in one to three months.

Fertilization, overwintering and transplanting

Do not fertilize the plant for the first six months because it draws nutrients from the seed. Then start fertilizing with a third of the recommended dose of liquid fertilizer and gradually increase the dose to the recommended full amount. At the end of the summer, gradually reduce fertilization and watering until the end of September, when it is time for the mango to overwinter in a room with a temperature of around 15 ° C with as much light as possible.

The ideal place for growing mango trees is a heated greenhouse with the possibility of lighting. The warmer it is, the more we have to give the mango tree light, which also applies to older plants, which can already winter in a colder environment, but of course not where the temperature drops to zero.

In one to two years, plant the mango tree in a mixture consisting of coconut pulp, compost and clay garden soil in a flowerpot two to four centimeters larger than the original.

When you can look forward to the harvest

Mango tree is a tree of tropics and subtropics growing in nature to a height of forty meters. It will definitely not be so big in our country and you will not see the first flowers until after seven long years, when the mango begins to bear fruit for the first time. The fruits contain a large amount of vitamin C. If you manage to grow at least two fruits, you can prepare a refreshing salad, ice cream or something good from Indian cuisine, which includes mango.
