The owners respect the atmosphere of the 20s in their house

They fell in love with the location. There is peace, beautiful nature and the city part of Prague itself offers amazing sports, cultural and social facilities.

"We found a house from 1923, which the owner decided to sell because it was only used for a summer stay," say our hosts. And because they liked him so much, they did not hesitate and exchanged the city for a pleasant countryside.

Although it was an old house, it was in decent condition and they did not have to start demanding construction modifications. They kept the facade of the house as well as the wooden windows and the original layout of the house. They are probably only waiting for the renovation of the roof.

They have replaced the electricity distribution. The gas boiler is also new, and it works simultaneously with the second boiler, which uses solid fuel (wood) and has economical operation.

With feeling and taste

The owners wisely kept the materials and elements in the house that have their value, or sensitively refurbished them. They preserved, for example, the original doors and frames, handles and other small details that carry the spirit and atmosphere of the 20s and clearly belong to the house.

The wooden stairs and floors on the upper floor are original, they just renovated them and returned the wood to its natural beauty and structure. The floors on the ground floor are not original, but they also bought wooden ones to match the whole house. Timeless light tiles, which are well maintained and combine well with other elements, go perfectly with them.

The heart of the house is the kitchen and dining room, which freely connects to the spacious living room. Here, everyone will be attracted at first glance by three dominant elements: a generous library, a fireplace and an ancient piano.

A young family likes to use the stove to create a pleasant atmosphere and to warm up on cold autumn days. "It's very pleasant to hear the crackling of wood, see the fire, put my daughter to sleep and read," praises the lady of the house.

A large custom-made library was requested by a friend of Vojta, who loves books, and the individual shelves are clearly divided according to genre into certain sections.

In the living room, new home elements blend beautifully with older equipment. The owners treasure the carpet from their grandmother, as well as the old piano from the original owners, which they accepted as a natural part of the house.

Kitchen and dining room

The kitchen and dining room are a woman's prerogative, which is why Mrs. Veronika took up the design together with the architect.

"A lot of my ideas are reflected here. I like wood, simple, functional and compact Scandinavian style," she explains.

The set offers plenty of storage space, there is also a pantry for preserves and goodies from the garden, which come in handy in winter. The owner's practicality is also reflected in the choice of dining table and chairs. The table is extendable, comfortable and can accommodate several family members.

The chairs have soft padding and upholstery made of merino wool, which is high-quality, durable and still nice to look at.

Men's room for a lady

An interesting room is the so-called men's room, which is still waiting to be furnished. So far, at first glance, it is inhabited by a woman. There is a sewing machine and maybe ten wedding dresses hanging on the rack. Veronika works creatively here: she sews old clothes, helps to "revive" original materials and rescue vintage pieces.

"My heart is drawn to ancient fashion from the 70s, I try to collect it, upcycle it, educate myself in sewing and practice, because I don't like buying clothes in fashion chains," explains Veronika Matějková, who founded the project called Tvorbou.

Her great love is also finding and purchasing older wedding dresses, which she then modifies. "Even though these are distinctly old pieces, a bride can still wear them today. They are timeless in terms of cut and are a good alternative today," explains Veronika.

“I already have a decent collection and I plan to open a small rental shop of vintage pieces. I will certainly reach out to some of the women who, for example, like to borrow 50-year-old dresses from our grandmothers and aunts," says the owner with a smile.

Veronika would like to address women who respect slow fashion, think in its spirit and do not want to buy new clothes. On the contrary, they like to wear clothes with a story, a soul...

What is planned?

The older house has its own unique atmosphere, especially on the floor under the roof. There are beautiful wooden beams in the space, which the owners want to preserve. They also plan to build skylights towards the garden, which will let more daylight into the space.

They don't yet know whether there will be two rooms for children's rooms or a large playroom with a swing, a ladder and creative elements for children. But it certainly won't happen to them that there is a "warehouse or graveyard of things", filled with cabinets and boxes.

They try not to overload themselves with objects, they like to donate unnecessary things and profess a more minimalist approach to life.

The piano still stands in the same place and the new owners took it as part of the house. The original owner once wanted it to be played by passengers at the Radotín railway station, but in the end it stayed where it belongs. Photo: Milan Malíček, Právo
