When you grow your own seedlings, it will have several advantages for you: Not only will you know exactly which variety you are actually growing, but the plants grown at home are much stronger and therefore more resistant to possible diseases and pests.

Purchase pepper seeds from proven sellers

The first important step is the selection of seeds. When purchasing them, you should primarily rely on proven brands and growers with tradition. This is the only way you can really be sure that you will purchase quality seed. There are plenty of specialized brick-and-mortar stores and e-shops on the market. The largest producers are the companies Semo and Seva Seed, but we must not forget smaller companies that specialize in the breeding of specific species. For peppers, it is, for example, the Libera company.

When buying, also pay close attention to the age of the seed. You can find the year on the packaging. In addition, the name and address of the company, the type and variety of the plant, the number of seeds or, for smaller ones, their weight must not be missing. Even if you like a variety or a company, never buy seeds to store for the next years. Their germination decreases with every month.

Seed germination can be accelerated. How to do it?

When you have the seed at home, you can start sowing. You will need a light substrate with coarser sand. Spread the seeds on it and then cover with a layer of this substrate no more than a centimeter high. Keep warm at a temperature of about twenty-eight degrees Celsius and the surface will grow regularly and sufficiently. The temperature should definitely not drop below twenty-two degrees.

Germination can be accelerated by soaking the seed in lukewarm water for one day before sowing. Another solution is to let the seeds pre-germinate on the pulp. All you have to do is put it on the bottom of a container, moisten it sufficiently with cooled boiled water and spread the seeds on it. Then cover the container with foil and let it stand in a warm place.

Peppers need enough light

In order for the seeds not only to germinate, but for the plants to continue to grow and thrive, you should provide them with an ideal environment. In addition to the already mentioned temperature, it is above all enough light. A window sill facing south or east is ideal. If your window is covered by a curtain, pull it back. Even this can deprive germinating plants of much-needed light rays. Keep the substrate or cotton wool moist at all times. Discard plants that are moldy or stunted without mercy.

Five tips that will ensure successful pre-growing of plants

Transplanting seedlings: What you must not forget?

When the sprout is about fifteen to twenty millimeters long and two true, developed leaves, pierce the plants into separate containers, for example with long tweezers. For example, yogurt cups are ideal. Wash them thoroughly with hot water. Don't forget to make holes in the bottom of them so that the excess water from the watering can drain away and the substrate does not remain too wet. Your seedlings would start to rot and die.

Prepare the substrate in advance. It is important to rid it of all mold and fungus germs. You sterilize it by steaming it thoroughly before use, e.g. in the oven. And remember that the more heat and light you give your pepper seedlings, the better they will do for you. If you feel that their growth is slowing down, fertilize them. Transplant the grown plants to a flower bed or greenhouse only at the end of May, when they are no longer in danger of ground frosts.
