Napoleonics at Loučeň Castle

Napoleonic days at Loučeň Castle|photo: Markéta Vejvodová, Czech Radio

Loučeň will pay tribute to fallen soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars by repairing their monument and reconstructing the famous battle at Hüningen. He invites all lovers of military history, but also Lučeň patriots, to commemorate the lesser-known but famous history of our ancestors.

Městys Loučeň will commemorate the heroism of Loučeň prince Karel Aloys Fürstenberg and his soldiers in the first part of the Napoleonic wars in the Rhineland region on 16 October 2021.

Let's move to the years 1796/97, when the Austrian troops are fighting in many places with the French revolutionary troops. One of the main commanders of the allied troops is the owner of the Lučen estate, Karl Aloys, Prince Fürstenberg, who devoted his entire life to military service for the Habsburg emperor. The Battle of Hüningen took place on October 26, 1796 – February 5, 1797 and was a victory for the imperial arms. Field Marshal Fürstenberk himself became famous for his valor, as did his soldiers from among the subjects of the Lučen pantry. Many of them, however, fell in this distant land, and the prince had a monument erected to them, which today will return to its place in its original state, and this memory will be dedicated to them.

In the second battle demo, we advance several years of history to the town of Stockach on Lake Constance, where on March 25, 1799, the troops of the Habsburg Monarchy led by Archduke Karl and France led by Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan clashed. The battle ended victoriously for the Habsburg weapons, but at the cost of heavy losses. The prince of Lučen, one of the best Austrian military leaders, Field Marshal Karl Aloys Fürstenberg also fell in the battle. His widow let a few meters from the memorials of his fallen soldiers "Helm", set up his monument. In August 1813, Emperor Francis of Austria, Tsar Alexander of Russia and King Frederick William of Prussia met over the field marshal's grave. After the regimental ceremony, the allied troops set out to face one of the most important battles of modern Europe - the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig.
