Tornado in Moravia: Six dead, huge damage, but also billions in aid. The first 10 days clearly

The first hours and days after the tornado resembled the villages in Podluží a dystopian landscape from a disaster movie. Tree stumps, debris in the streets, roof beams broken like matches, cars crumpled like cigarette boxes. Thanks to the feverish work of locals and volunteers, firefighters and the army, ten days after the natural disaster, the overall picture changed for the better. But the return to normal will be long.

Three villages and one township in the Břeclavsk and Hodonínsk now look more like one big construction site. Cars transporting rubble, wood and construction materials practically do not stop, there are slowly more people on the roofs than in the streets. Tents and temporary shelters, where volunteers meet at the food stalls, have a friendly atmosphere that somewhat resembles a festival town.

Even after ten days, a strong contrast between the narrow strip where the tornado passed and the surrounding area remains. A few hundred meters away, sunflower fields bloom, roadside cherries turn red and hikers pedal their bicycles. Around the affected villages, however, the fields are planed, the trees are broken and people do not think about trips.

The contrast is visible even within the municipalities. For example, a part of Moravská Nová Ves is practically undamaged, for example decorative cups were left on a slatted fence at one house. On the other side of the township, the wind tore off roofs and some fences were completely gone - including the one near the cemetery.
