They are beautiful, they are stylish and they are in the Czech Republic. We select the most interesting accommodation where you can spend the night - CZECHDESIGN

This story is almost like from the red library. A young couple with corporate experience and work abroad decided one day that they wanted to devote their time to something completely different. In the picturesque, but still somewhat neglected center of Znojmo, they looked at an old, devastated house, where a bakery used to be. And with their own diligence, they gradually turn it into magical apartments, aptly named Stará Pekárna.

You would certainly not expect from the street what beauties await you inside the house. Although everything is still in process, you can already marvel at the historic ceiling in the former warehouse, today the central part of the entire space. The owners, Valerie and David, decided to approach the reconstruction in their own way and are dusting everything off little by little. They are inspired by the eclectic style they have come to love during their travels. It must be said that the whole space seems airy and clean.

No unnecessary historicizing elements and artificial references to the venerable age of the old house. Although South Moravian Znojmo is popular among tourists, it still catches the second breath. Stará Pekárna is lucky to be located in Velká Mikulášská street, which leads not only to the famous rotunda, but also to the prized Enoteca from the successful couple Chybík and Krištof. In addition, across from the accommodation, perhaps the nicest cafe in Znojmo – Balance Coffee and Wine – has its facilities. The owners of the apartments have also recently agreed with the cult modern architecture photographers Boys Play Nice, and they will have their own small studio on the ground floor. Znojmo is slowly but surely becoming a mecca of local design. Also thanks to the determined and enthusiastic owners of the Old Bakery.

Enthusiasm and determination are also present in our second story. It is much more magnificent and it certainly takes a lot of effort to raise it from the ashes. The Cvikov Brewery is located at the other end of the country in the beautiful Lusatian Mountains, which are captivating with their nature, but still carry a number of historical scars on their shoulders.

In short, the Sudetenland still only remembers the boom period, and often only a bitter aftertaste remains on the tongue of the locals. Local native and owner of Cvikov Brewery Jiří Jakoubek decided to change that. Less than ten years ago, he bought the entire area of the historic brewery and decided on a sensitive and complete reconstruction, where Hotel Kleis also found its place. The architectural office Architekti Adikon took on the project to save the brewery, which stood on its site already in the mid-19th century, and rightfully won the Facade of the Year 2015 competition. The entire conversion is conceived extremely empathetically and consistently, and is admirable, especially due to its quantity and size buildings. As we unfortunately know from a number of other examples, not every owner is this enlightened, and historical technical buildings in the Czech Republic often have a different future planned. In piles of rubble.

Visitors to the brewery can learn about the beer production process during the tour. The main part of the tour is the heart of the brewery – the copper brewhouse located in a room with monumental industrial windows, as well as the original log cellars where the lager tanks and spilka are located. | Source: Cvikov Brewery

The Cvikov brewery and the Kleis Hotel in its premises are fortunately a different story. Work is currently underway on the renovation of other buildings, which should soon have their own bakery and social facilities for hotel guests. There will also be a large biergarten by the pond, where you will certainly feel like you are in the famous outdoor German beer halls, which are missing here. This place is a shining example of how determined individuals can change the character of a place and slowly restore it to its lost dignity. Hopefully there will only be more of them here.

Our other two tips combine a love of nature and unconventional design. After all, it is a new trend that has become popular with more and more people and it is called glamping. Why give up comfort and high-quality facilities, even if you are otherwise a traveler at heart? Our first tip is the atypical tents in Huty pod Třemšín - Glamping Brdy.

The tent is located right in the heart of the protected landscape area of Brdy and offers you an unforgettable experience. | Source: Glamping Brdy

They are beautiful, they are stylish and they are in Czech Republic. We choose the most interesting accommodation where you can spend the night - CZECHDESIGN

You might be surprised that it is located in a small village on a large plot of a family house, but don't worry, the placement of the individual tents is so sophisticated that the connection with meadows and forests is guaranteed. Large tents are prototypes that can be made to measure, but the right space where you place them plays a major role. Their big benefit is the transparent front part, thanks to which you can observe birds in the morning and watch fearless deer in the evening right from your bed. In short, it's not the same without a proper landscape under the windows. Brdy have exactly this advantage.

An outdoor sauna and a wooden bathing barrel will perfectly relax your body and mind. | Source: Glamping Brdy

In addition, right next to each tent is a private front garden with a sauna, outdoor seating and, for winter weather, a tub with heated water. In combination with a thoughtfully designed interior, which will provide you with all the facilities and comfort, it is an ideal weekend combination. The futuristic appearance of the outer shell may outrage old-timers, but in the case of a sensitive location, it is certainly less intrusive on the landscape than with some Czech constructions. Glamping Brdy is thus a great choice for all those whose bones are already too worn for an ordinary tent and who don't like overly luxurious hotels.

Altány Orlice is a relatively new project that you can find in Hradec Králové. But as the name suggests, this is not a housing in the city center. On the contrary, the sound of the river Orlice will soothe you to sleep. The wooden mini-houses are located in the area of the swimming pool in the outskirts of Hradec Králové district of Slezské prétměstí, so you will have the feeling that you are more in the wilderness than in the East Bohemian metropolis of Josef Gočár.

The Sasanka and Stulík gazebos refer to the Finnish style of camping, and the truth is that you can feel as if you are in the north. The gazebo is completely glazed, of course with the option of closing all the windows, so you literally wake up with a view of the magical river.

Everything is simply, yet tastefully furnished, and a family with a small child will enjoy their stay without any problems. If you arrive in the winter months, the attraction should be the Saunalautta river sauna, which is located just below the Altány and would easily make it into the TOP 5 most beautiful saunas in the country. In the summer, you can enjoy the clear rivers right under your windows, after all, Orlice has been known for its cleanliness for years. Or just sit in front of the gazebos with a glass of wine and watch the ducks and birds. The idyll of the river spa is guaranteed.

Our last tip is a unique realization not far from Tábor. The building with the unconventional name Gwendolína, which originates from a composition by Vladimír Poštulka, the owner's father, stands in a small South Bohemian village and, like the other aforementioned projects, relies on a close connection with the surrounding landscape. Its authors from the Skvadra architekti studio were not afraid of atypical shapes, and yet they managed to invent a non-invasive modern cottage.

The poetic name Gwendolína is not only associated with a standard apartment house. With its atypical appearance, you will definitely not miss this modern wooden building. | Source: Gwendolína House

The wooden structure was originally supposed to serve the owners as a private holiday home, but fortunately they decided to share their Gwendolyn. And so you have the chance to enjoy a few nights in a place where spending weekends is a joy. The swimming pool available to guests will certainly play its part in the sweltering heat. And above all, the overall tastefully furnished interior of the cottage, in which the owner, graphic designer Eva Poštulková, who years ago won the Good Student Design award for the processing of typographic newspapers, also participated.

On the ground floor there is a large and cozy open space with a kitchen, a sofa and a fireplace. | Source: Gwendolína House

In the past, there was an original village building on the site, but nothing has survived. Nevertheless, the atmosphere of past centuries is present. The perimeter masonry of Gwendolína is made of old stones that were left over from the demolition of the old house. Thanks to this, the whole area has a pleasant and warm feel. Skvadroid, as the architects themselves call it, is a great example of how to work with shape and matter in a Czech village without giving up on invention. Thumbs up for us for sure!
