He loved old cars, exploring foreign cultures and the Smetana's Litomyšl festival.Traveler Miroslav Zikmund died on Wednesday.He was 102 years old.He was born in Pilsen, but he later became Zlín, where he owned a wonderful villa, where he had thousands of books, hundreds of souvenirs from the travels and of course a travel map with marked places that he personally visited.

He made his first trip abroad when he was sixteen years old.At that time, a native of Pilsen Miroslav Zikmund and his brother went to Carpathian Ruthenia, which was then part of the interwar Czechoslovakia.Foreign regions always dragged him, so it's no wonder he started studying after graduation at university.When he ended college in 1946, he met Jiří Hanzelka and his life took a new direction.Both of them adored traveling.

Together they went to Africa and Latin America.During their travels as sales representatives, they promoted Czechoslovak companies and told about their adventure trips in radio reports.Their Tatra 87 expeditions have become legendary.They passed the Nubian desert, and even spent the night at the top of Cheops's pyramid.After 1989, when the border opened, Sigismund went to Australia.He visited a large piece of the world in his life.He was a traveler of his body and soul, and his passion also tells his villa, in which he spent moments when he did not misery around the world.

Home in Zlín will be retained

The spacious villa in Zlín tells of Zikmund's roads.There is also a spacious library crowded with various books and walls where the souvenirs he brought from the world.The photographs he took on the way of the foreign regions also reminded.The interior is complemented by a globus and a wall map on which there are marked places that he visited.

The new owner of the Zlín villa, in which Sigismund lived for almost 70 years, became the Zlín entrepreneur and president of the Zlín Film Festival Čestmír Vančura at the beginning of this year.Sigismund offered him a villa to buy, Vančura accepted the offer and became chairman of the endowment fund Zikmund's villa, who takes care of the building.There are also thousands of books and hundreds of travel items in the house.The house should remain as much as possible after the reconstruction in which the traveler lived.In particular, the intended visitor center in unused basement should serve the public.

“Unfortunately, Miroslav Zikmund's August record will remain the last one.With regret we confirm the sad message that 1.December 2021 Miroslav Zikmund went to his last trip to his partner Jiří Hanzelka.The commemorative place will be established in the lobby of the Museum of Southeast Moravia in Zlín, where the couple H+Z donated their collections.For neighbors from the immediate vicinity of the villa we will arrange a place to ignite the candle at the bottom goal in the garden, ”said Vančura for ČTK.
