Already on the first inspection of the site, it was clear to the architect that it would be necessary to adjust the thermal comfort and layout of the apartment, in particular to solve the inadequate bathroom and toilet, which was completely inappropriately located under the sloping roof in the chamber.

"We moved the toilet and thus managed to place a laundry basket and a washing machine in the atypical space of the original chamber, which originally occupied almost a quarter of the area of the already small bathroom," explains architect Petra Vasquez, who created space in the new bathroom for comfortable bathtub, sink and radiator for drying towels. The useful value of the bathroom is increased by the skylight, which allows daylight to enter the room, and at the same time serves to ventilate moisture. The windows in the apartment are located towards the north and south, for a better climate in the apartment, air conditioning units were installed in the living rooms.

Maisonette artfully combines historical and modern elements. It became the Interior of the Year

The owner wanted to have a retro-style apartment, so for example there is a spiral radiator in the hall with surface-conducted copper leads, round porcelain switches and sockets are mounted on the walls, and the architect chose porcelain as a cladding element mosaic.

The white base of the interior is freshly complemented by the warm yellow color that appears throughout the apartment and oak wood. The doors to the bathroom and to the toilet are equipped with a practical round window made of opaque satin glass, which connects both rooms with the corridor through illumination.

The kitchen underwent a big change

Another place that needed modifications was the kitchen, where several important functional changes took place. The new arrangement corresponds to the principles of ergonomics, so the kitchen is arranged in order from the left – refrigerator, work surface, sink, work surface, cooking zone, work surface. "Moving the cooking zone under the window eliminated the need to install a hood, at the same time there is more space around the hob for food preparation," the architect explains the reasons for the modifications.

Another change compared to the original layout of the kitchen was the incorporation of a refrigerator into the kitchen unit, creating space for a small folding table and two chairs in the corner of the room.

The kitchen unit is neutral white with a wooden top, pleasantly enlivened by a yellow mosaic and retro accessories. In order to make the overall renovation cheaper, the kitchen cabinets are from Ikea, and the tabletop was fitted by a carpenter.

Combination of new and old

The renovation budget is further optimized by careful selection of new furniture, but also by preserving existing usable elements, for example the corpus large built-in wardrobes in the bedroom. The front side and the cabinet door in white color were newly made and equipped with leather handles.

Because it is an attic apartment, the beams that have been damaged are visible in the interior. Therefore, the owner considered painting them white, but in the end they were covered with oak paneling at the architect's suggestion, which resolved the unsatisfactory appearance and materially connected them to the floor. After cladding, the beams have a more massive impression, which benefits the interior overall.

The apartment is suitable for Karlín

After reconstruction, the apartment provides a modern living standard, while the details and materials used follows the style of the original apartment building in Prague's Karlín district. The owner of the apartment had a clear idea of the amount of investment in interior modifications and did not originally plan construction changes. But in the end, she took advice and changes to the layout of the apartment fundamentally affect its utility value. This mainly concerns changes in the layout of partitions, waste, the demolition of the door to the living space and the installation of a new floor. In the end, however, it was possible to stick to the budget with only a minimal increase.

"Petra Vasquez helped me create a place where I have everything I need and where I feel good. And I'm glad that everyone else who has stayed in my apartment for a short or long time feels good here as well. I think it's an apartment that suits Karlín. Despite its modern appearance, it has his soul," the owner of the apartment evaluated the result of the renovation.
