Musil lives on Roatan. They are building family houses on an island in the Caribbean

In Roatan, the air temperature day and night is around 28 degrees Celsius and the sea temperature can be higher. There are no venomous snakes or spiders. As the last island discovered in the Caribbean, it is still evolving. Many people will also appreciate the first language English and the official language Spanish. The only religion is Christianity.

With the desire for adventure, our love deepened and we said our "yes" just a month before departure. Thus, our trip to Roatan also became a wedding and we had an argument for our caring family, which gave us a blessing.

The last piece in our puzzle was to provide accommodation, which we managed to find through a social network. This marked the beginning of our new life phase with the words: "Good everywhere, why be at home".

We stayed in the middle of a black village in Sandy Bay on the northwest side of the island. Our wooden apartment for $ 500 a month had two bedrooms, one for us and the other for visitors. The modest kitchen equipment consisted only of a refrigerator, an old gas stove, a microwave and a sink.

We exchanged the luxury of home with a dishwasher, food processors and other modern appliances that you rely on every day for a view of dancing hummingbirds, fresh coconuts for breakfast, running green lizards and swimming with dolphins.

No wonder you encounter an ant invasion in the tropical belt, mosquitoes bite you more often than at home, and torrential rain flows through your windows. But still, it's only a fraction of what the island will pay you back.

A call abroad

Send your housing and experience from abroad to bydleni@idnes.cz under the name Czechs Abroad.

Like most young people, the two of us did not last long, and a week after our arrival, we began offering properties for a development project in the main port of Coxen Hole, where thousands of tourists from the United States regularly bring transoceanic ships.

Most of our clients come with the same goal as us, to build a secure background away from the influence of the world's powers. The locals are incredibly friendly and kind. The willingness will not cease to amaze you.

Compared to other countries in Central America, it is nice that foreigners can also own a house here, including land. For example, 3 + kk apartments in a protected Italian resort can be bought for 59 thousand dollars, in terms of 1.4 million crowns.

The advantage for building a house is also very low acquisition costs for materials. Even quality wood such as mahogany or cedar is up to ten times cheaper than in the USA. On the island you will also come across extremely skilled craftsmen, such as carpenters and carvers.

Our original house was made entirely of wood, we lived on the first floor.

Due to commuting for certain projects, we moved to the Flowers Bay area, which lies in the southwestern part of the island. We rented a small brick house right by the sea with a pool and palapa (gazebo) with hammocks. Interestingly, the whole complex was originally built for former President George W. Bush, who was to spend time fishing and relaxing here.

We pay $ 575 a month for rent and internet, including cable TV, which has a layer of dust on its controller because we never turned it on. Other housing costs are very low compared to the Czech Republic.

The water is mainly used for rain and you don't have to pay for it. Drinking water is bought in barrels, one costs 37 crowns. Gas is also cheap here and the bottle, which costs about 370 crowns, will last 2 to 3 months.

The most expensive item is electricity. That costs $ 0.35 per 1 kWh. This price should soon fall, as one Colombian investor told us, who is planning to transform the whole island into so-called green energy, using mainly sun and water. In the future, the price should fall to $ 0.20 per 1 kWh.

You don't need that much on the island. Although there are slightly more expensive rentals, you will save on food and clothes. Vegetables, fruits, rice, cereals, meat, fish and seafood are affordable and can be said to be organic without anyone addressing what "organic" is. Only one road passes through the island and transport between the beaches will not be expensive for you, because a liter of diesel costs approximately 18 crowns.

The evergreen Roatan is a little known island in the Caribbean.
