Herbariums and labyrinths. These are the eight most stylish castle hotels in the Czech Republic

The bell rang and the fairy tale was over. This year may not have been quite a fairy tale - it is more appropriate to escape from rising inflation and prices to the backdrops reminiscent of carefree fairy tales at its end. To the castle.

Dozens of castle hotels operate in the Czech Republic, and several new, luxurious chateaus have been added to the list even in this challenging year. We put together a selection of those where we felt the best.

The Gardener's House at the Chateau in Žďár nad Sázavou

You will feel like you are in the middle of a herbarium in the Gardener's House at the Žďár Castle, where Countess Marie Kinsky opened a boutique guesthouse with four apartments after a three-year renovation. The rooms differ in color matching, they are united by the emphasis on natural materials and a more than successful interplay of old and new.

Literally a few steps from Zahradník's House, you will find the Museum of the New Generation, which in 2016 was ranked among the most creative in Central Europe. There are several jewels from the UNESCO list in the vicinity. Definitely the discovery of the year for us!

Chateau Trnová

Even the neighbors in Trnová often had no idea about the existence of the castle hidden behind a high wall. The Czech-Danish couple, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen, bought it during the pandemic and within half a year opened a hotel that combines a sense of Danish hygge with a traditional castle style.

The restaurant run by Pavel Veltruský is worth a visit in itself, and the feeling of the castle lords and ladies will be underlined by a horse ride, which you can order in the adjacent stables.

Chateau Kotěra

The luxurious villa in Ratboř was built for the owners of the local sugar factory, Jan Kotěra, one of the fathers of Czech modern architecture, and at one time even President Masaryk stayed here. Today, you too can stay in this delicacy equipped with cubist and modernist furniture.

In the summer you can play tennis, cricket or giant mikado with metre-long playing sticks in the castle park, now in the winter you should go to the nearby Kutná Hora for monuments or art.

Chateau Třebešice

If you want to live in a work of art, head to Třebešice, which is a twenty-minute drive from Chateau Kotěra. The Italian owners sensitively renovated the local Renaissance castle with a moat into an original boutique hotel.

And since they are both active in the art scene, the hotel is full of works created especially for this place by international artists in residence. In the summer, the adjacent garden is also a wonderful experience, and occasionally great home cooking by the master of the house. Maybe you'll just be lucky.

Chateau Herálec

In a small village in Vysočina stands a castle with a big heart and ambitions. They were the first in Central Europe to open the Spa by L'Occitane concept on Herálec: here you will find a stylish swimming pool under medieval arches, a private hot tub in the tower, but also an airy silencarium – a relaxation room with a glass wall with views of the castle park.

A part of the spa is also a herbarium, i.e. an herbal pharmacy, where they will prepare a custom mixture for your ailments.

Chateau Loučeň Garden Retreat

At Loučeň you can stay in the authentic interiors of a noble palace, but with the comfort of the 21st century. The three luxurious apartments are named after the castle's owners - the Valdštejn, Fürstenberk and Thurn-Taxis families - and their furnishings correspond to the style of the time when the respective families owned the castle.

A delicacy for romantics is the garden villa hidden in the middle of the castle park. In it you will find twelve unique labyrinths, with which Loučeň ranks among the largest labyrinths in the world.

Chateau Mitrowicz

If you are planning a wedding in the coming year and want to say yes in a castle setting, go to Týn nad Vltavou. For newlyweds, it offers a suite with a private entrance to the chapel of St. Anna and a stunning view of the illuminated ceiling frescoes straight from the balcony.

For worldly pleasures, there is a large, free-standing bathtub for two. A total of forty-six guests can be accommodated in the rooms of the Vratislav family from Mitrovic and the adjacent brewery building, but only if they rent the entire premises.

Chateau Mcely

If you love castles and like to be pampered, you definitely know this address. Inéz and Jim Cusumano were among the first to show Czechs how to combine premium quality with homely comfort and top-notch service, all in a romantic castle setting.

The hotel and luxury spa have maintained a high bar for many seasons in a row and are still coming up with new products - from their own line of natural cosmetics, ceramics and fashion accessories to the apartment that the Cusumans opened under their own brand just before the pandemic in Prague.
