Freedom, surfing and working on the beach. The digital nomad is living his dream

Freedom, surfing and working on the beach. The digital nomad is living his dream

You say you're a digital nomad. What can I imagine under that? It is mainly great freedom and independence. You can go where you want. You don't have to get up early in the morning, you have a sea view from the window, you work on the beach. All you really need is a laptop and the internet.

How did you get into such a job? I had to work on it a lot and be more active than others. But it was worth it. I'm pretty determined, I always go my own way. I don't have a problem working much. I have set a minimum and maximum number of words that I must submit in a week. And I always keep to the maximum. Not only because of course I earn more, but I just enjoy it .. And most importantly, the more you put into it, the greater the interest in your work. It motivates me and keeps me moving. But I don't think living as a digital nomad is for everyone.

Is it about discipline? Exactly. This is very important.

Island hopping in the Philippines.

And when you're at the seaside, you're never tempted to say: I'm going to do it today? But yes. But if I do, I have to sit at the computer for sixteen hours at a time to catch up.

So, as a digital nomad, you can make a living and still have enough money to travel? It costs something too ... Definitely. But I buy tickets essentially in action. Maybe now I managed to get a return ticket to Sri Lanka for nine thousand. That, I think, is the basis. As soon as I get somewhere, I'm looking for more action tickets.

So you don't have a specific plan. Are you just waiting for what you can get? Exactly. Lately, I've mostly been heading to Southeast Asia, because it's beautiful there and you can live there for little money. I traveled almost all of it. I think it's an ideal destination for digital nomads.

Why? Because of spending? Just. Of course, you can treat yourself to a luxury hotel for two thousand crowns a night, but at the same time you can still get a night in a share room for five dollars. I've traveled so much too. But now I'm a little different and I'm enjoying more comfort.

For example? In Sri Lanka, I will live on the beach in a two-storey bungalow with a terrace overlooking the sea, where I will work beautifully. I'm looking forward to getting up in the morning and immediately burying my feet in the sand! There is also a restaurant on the beach and a five-minute walk to the surf spot. I plan to surf every day. I would find cheaper accommodation, but I wanted to make myself happy.

Why Sri Lanka? That's where I learned to surf. I'm really looking forward to it. Only one thing scares me a little. About five years ago, the Lonely Planet guide declared Sri Lanka the number one destination and that year it was hell. Everyone wanted to go there to see. So I wonder what has changed. But surfing is the best I've experienced. And maybe the water is still the same.

After work, Veronika always finds time for her favorite surfing.

Were there times when you were a more modest traveler? But I'm modest! I still count and try not to waste unnecessarily. I'm not materially based, so I don't need a car, piles of clothes and cosmetics to be lucky.

Have you ever encountered people envious of this lifestyle? Of course, many times. Even when I was writing the blog, I had a lot of envious reactions under the articles. Sometimes someone in my area wonders how I can afford to travel so much. But I always say that everyone is the architect of their happiness. When a person really tries, searches, learns, works on himself, he has a chance to prove a lot. You have to go your own way and not decide what you think. No one else will live your life.

Do you travel alone? I travel with my husband most often. Firstly, I like to share experiences and secondly, I think that men should travel alone. I admire the solo traveler, but I think a lonely woman on the road is terribly defenseless. I have some unpleasant experiences from India, for example, and we traveled in pairs with my cousin and we were definitely not dressed defiantly.

How often do you go somewhere? We are usually six to seven months a year away. But I would still drive more often. I'm able to pack up in an hour and head to the airport.

How many countries have you visited? About forty-five.

And where did you like the most? In South America, for example, I was really fascinated by Chile. This is a matter of the heart for me. In Southeast Asia, the Philippines would win. They are made up of many beautiful islands and there is still something to discover. In addition, there are few tourists because it is not so easy to get there. The journey with transfers will take three days, which is an unnecessary waste of time for people who go on a two-week vacation. But above all, there are beautiful beaches in the Philippines like from a fairy tale with white sand and turquoise sea.

Beautiful beaches and sea, nature, sights. This is what attracts the digital nomad away from home.

When you're abroad, do you travel and get to know each other, or do you stay in one place? Both. When we are in a brand new country, we travel it on a scooter. And if we like it there, we return to one place and prefer comfort. Especially when there is nice surfing or diving.

What will you never leave without? Definitely without a laptop, camera and mobile phone. That is a necessity. I need them to work.

The technology will probably take up a lot of space in the luggage. What will you save him for? For clothes. When you go for a month in the heat, you need almost nothing. All you need are flip-flops, shorts, tank tops, swimwear ... And what you will miss, you can buy on the spot for a few crowns. When I go on a sightseeing trip to Asia, I am able to pack in a backpack. If I go to one place, I will also pack books.

Books? Printed? You're a bit of an old-fashioned digital nomad ... I like the computer, the phone and the internet because they allow me to do the job I do. But when it comes to social networks, mobile applications, e-books, I don't have to. I'm old-fashioned in that. I take books with me, rather than sending letters than emails. Even the guides suit me more printed. I have a decent collection at home. There are my memories in them. Those from countries I've been to several times already have such a nice patina.

Photography is also a part of her work.

Why is it still luring you away? After all, it's nice here too. I found out that when a person is at home for a long time, he doesn't pay much attention to his surroundings, he is no longer so attentive. But when I get somewhere, I perceive everything - whether it's people, the smell of the air, the sounds, the architecture, the nature. Every time I travel, I live in the present moment. While when I'm at home, I plan, think ahead, handle appointments and work. In addition, I do not have surfing, diving, sea, space ...

So you want to be a nomad forever? Why not? I have a dream job, a wonderful relationship, a beautiful life. I travel, I meet different people, cultures, nature. It's so rewarding. I can't imagine myself: from now on I'll just be home.
