The best way to get to Zderazi is by car from road I/37 from Chrudim via Chrast and Skuteč along road 358. Park the vehicle in the parking lot next to the local fire station.

Dwelling carved into the rock

Let's not rush into nature, let's take a look around the village. Its rarity is the sandstone cellars, which were originally a relatively easily built dwelling for the immigrants after the abolition of slavery in the sandstone rocks, of which there are plenty everywhere.

Allegedly, over five dozen of them lived here at one time. Gradually, their use changed to classic cellars, the last one was still inhabited in 1905.

Twenty of them have been preserved to this day, and two of them can be viewed with a guided tour. Just ring number 31. Everything is well signposted from the parking lot.

It is in these cellars that the elf Zderadák lives to this day, a descendant of the Zeman Zderad, the founder of the village.

Excursion to sandstone gorges

Let's now follow the yellow tourist sign. We will reach the village of Bor u Skutče after 2.5 kilometers along a sandy forest road between pine trees.

On the way, we will cross three valleys of picturesque streams and sandstone rocks will gradually appear along the way.

The entire area is made up of Cenomanian sandstone that is less than 100 million years old. Compared to the rock towers, for example, in Český Raj, in this area, erosion has created walls and ravines in the sandstone.

From Bor we continue following the green sign. Right behind the village is the nice rock lookout Petrovna.

Through the valley called Za Borky, we will reach the most interesting place of our journey, Toulovcovy Maštale. Here, the sandstone ravines form a real labyrinth, which we can walk through a marked circuit, about two hundred meters long.

According to the legend, the robber knight Toulovec hid here, who raided passing merchants and went on conquest expeditions as far as Moravia. If we have time, we can extend the trip by a circuit through Městské Maštale around the Velryba, Kostelíček and Panský stěl rock formations.

Refreshment from the well or in the pub

We continue following the red sign past the Džberka well to the village of Vranice. Here we can refresh ourselves in a nice pub. I especially recommend the goulash and Chotěboř ten.

Then we go along the valley against the current of the stream along the red path around Mojžíš's well with miraculous water and after a while we climb around the rocks with a ravine called Dudychova jeskyně.

We are already within sight of Bor. From it, we descend past the bizarre rock formation Columbus's egg to the Prosečské stream.

Several outcrops of hard granite in its bed form cascades and pools called Kupadla. After them, we will return on the cycle path through the exceptional isolated rock of the Pulpit, which we can comfortably reach via the carved steps. However, the view is only of the surrounding forests.

After three kilometres, the cycle route will take us back to Zderazi. We have eighteen kilometers behind us.

Pivnická rokle

Northwest of Zderazi there is another natural attraction, a valley deeply cut in the rocks, Pivnická rokle. It is accessible from the Novohradka river, or two kilometers from Zderazi via the blue-marked cycle path.

An occasional stream flows through it. The path here is much wilder than the paths we took to Maštalí. However, we will also meet far fewer tourists here.

For a reward, we can peek into one of the caves. Caution and a headlamp with you!

Interesting things in the area

If you have time, you can visit the pipe museum in nearby Proseč, or the rococo Nové Hrady castle with a cycling museum, or enjoy the landscape from one of the nearby lookouts - Toulovcova, Terezka, or Blueberry.
