Spindlík is a tree similar to a plum. Their fruits are similar in shape with their ovoid shape; but the pins tend to be smaller and have a yellow color.

Kdoule, ryngle, medlar: why grow old varieties of trees

Spindlík, mirabelle, myrobalan. How to recognize them?

Although these trees used to be very widespread, recently we can rarely see them. The original pair of old pins can still be found in Moravia. In the Czech Republic, this tree was attacked by scurvy (a viral disease), so only newly planted trees are found here.

If you see a pin-like tree by the side of the road or in the park, it is most likely a myrobalan. The fruits of this tree, which does not come from the plum family, are round compared to a pin, ripen earlier - around mid-August, and are not nearly as tasty. Their color is greenish, yellow and red.

How to grow regional and old varieties in an organic garden

The fruit of the mirabelle is very tasty, small, but usually larger than the fruits of the myrobalan, it has a round shape and a golden yellow color, which is complemented by the side that has been exposed sun, crimson speckling.

The skin can be easily peeled off. Mirabelka is found in our gardens more often than the pin, because the cultivar 'Nancyská' propagated in our country is resistant to scab.

How to grow pins?

Since pins belong to the plum family, its cultivation should not differ from, for example, the more well-known plum. These are relatively undemanding trees that suit any moist soil. Plant this tree in a bright and warm place, pins don't like the shade.

Pins are mostly propagated vegetatively (by grafting), but you can also try generative propagation (using seeds). The second method is more demanding and complicated, also take into account that new saplings do not have exactly the same characteristics as the mother plant.

In autumn it is good to prune the pins. The cut is made with common tools, a saw or scissors, depending on the thickness of the branch. Cut the young shoots by half, let the others grow.

What to do with them? The best is pin jam and schnapps

Pins have a very delicate aroma and a pleasantly sweet taste. Like other fruits, you can add them to various buns or cakes, but the best is pin marmalade. When cooking it, remember that it is a slightly more acidic fruit, so I recommend adding a larger amount of sugar than is common, for example, with recipes made from strawberries or other sweet fruits.

How to make pin marmalade: Try spicy, English or quick without pitting

Pins are especially excellent for making schnapps. Only fresh and undamaged fruit is used for fermentation, which is pitted and placed in a large fermentation vessel. You can use glass, ceramics, stainless steel, plastic and wood as a suitable material, avoid aluminum and iron. If you have done everything correctly, a fifty percent schnapps will be created, which is sold for approximately two hundred and fifty crowns per liter.
