Plant raspberries and blackberries. Also try hybrids and giant varieties

Raspberries and blackberries don't need much care, you just have to give them the right conditions. They grow practically alone, but need plenty of moisture and plenty of sun.

Blackberries once and for a long time, raspberries twice a year

Medicine from the garden

From blackberry leaves you can prepare tea suitable for diseases of the digestive system or oral cavity. Raspberry leaves help reduce fever, relieve stomach problems or inflammation of the urinary tract. They can also make childbirth easier - see the article Tips for pregnant women: mint relieves headaches, lemon balm soothes you or Easy birth: grandmother's advice will also help.

Blackberries bear fruit once a year, but gradually ripen for two months. However, some varieties of raspberries are perennial, you may also come across the term "double-fruited", but it is the same. "These raspberries bear fruit from old rods at the beginning of the summer, and in the autumn a richer harvest of new rods comes," explain Pavel Beran from the Kruh Subtropical Horticulture.

If you want to enjoy sweet fruit more than once a year, take a look at Primocane raspberries such as Heritage, Autumn Bliss or Golden Bliss. You will definitely not make a mistake with the new Polka variety. "Sometimes big fruits are a little tasteless, but these are big and full of flavor," Beran recommends.

What to choose? Crossed raspberries and blackberries fly

Choose a variety

The range of varieties is still growing. In addition to perennials, you can also get raspberries with yellow or black colored fruits. And if you choose thorn blackberries, you will no longer scratch when picking the fruit.

In addition, newly bred crossbred varieties have appeared in recent years, combining the size of blackberry fruit and the taste of raspberries. The raspberry is closer to raspberries, the blackberry raspberry is more similar to blackberries. In addition, blackberry raspberries tend to be thornless and their fruits ripen at the end of summer. In any case, both hybrids must be moored as blackberries so that the tendrils have a place to catch.

And how to choose the right seedling?

"Those with loose roots cost half as much, but only five of them will survive. That's why I recommend buying seedlings in containers, as a result they will actually come out at the same price," advises Pavel Beran from his own experience.

Raspberries don't have to be red. There are also yellow or black varieties.

Raspberry (Tayberry variety) offers large fruits like blackberry and a rich taste like raspberry.

Lots of sun, water and blackberry support

Blackberries and raspberries are planted at the beginning of autumn, which is just around the corner. Both polo shirts need a lot of sun, definitely do not put them in the shade.

Rather, humus-rich soil suits raspberries. Plant the individual seedlings at least half a meter apart, they do not have to be supported.

But a blackberry needs it so that its tendrils have something to catch - a lattice or wire fence will serve well. Blackberry can withstand dry but permeable soil, plant it at meter intervals.

Blackberry requires the sun, but it can withstand drier soil without any problems.

The raspberry needs a lot of sun and soil rich in humus.

Water both shrubs abundantly, but it must not remain in the water for a long time. Also give them the nutrition they need. "In our country, we fertilize with classic cererite, and autumn fertilizer helps blackberries ripen," advises the gardener.

How to freeze the crop of raspberries and blackberries

Remember their delicious taste even in winter and make supplies.

The shape and color of the fruit is best preserved by first freezing it spread out on a tray so that it does not touch each other. You can also lightly sprinkle them with sugar. When frozen, pour them into a bag and store in the freezer.

If you use frozen fruits for baking and their appearance does not play such a role, then it pays to fill the bags in such doses that you consume at once.

Or make original ice cubes for cocktails: throw one fruit into each mold with water before freezing.

And what about them after the harvest

After the harvest, get rid of the shrubs that have already harvested. "For twice-fruiting crops, last year's shoots, ie those that have already produced the second crop. In the meantime, new ones are growing from the spring, which bear fruit in the autumn.

Also remember that thorn blackberries as well as cross varieties are harder to tolerate harsh winters, so cover them properly before winter.
