How to do it

The protected landscape area Kokořínsko - Mách Region includes the Polomené Mountains (Kummergebirge), Dubská Rocks (Daubaer Schweiz), Kokořínský Důl, Pšovka Valley and adjacent valleys, as well as remote areas to the north and east of Mách Lake . The protected landscape area has an area of approximately 410 km² and extends to Mělnick, Českolipsk and Mladoboleslavsk.

The region of Kokořínska is roughly defined by the city of Dubá, the towns of Mšeno and Liběchov. The town of Mělník is an important traffic junction for all those who head to Kokořínsko by car, train, bus and bicycle.

The axes of Kokořínsk are the Pšovka river and the Liběchovka stream flowing from north to south. Roads with bus services run along both sides, there are campsites, guest houses and restaurants. Kokořínsko can also be reached by train, as the local train runs from Mělník via Lhotka, Nebužela and Kanina to Mšeno and then on to Mladá Boleslav. Other railways only touch the edges of Kokořínsk.

Pšovka and Liběchovka

Kokořínsko has a canyon-like character, in the northern part it becomes hilly. It consists of romantic sandstone rocks, overhangs and valleys with water only in wells. Basalt hills rise in several places. Castles and chateaux, well-preserved villages and nature reserves are important.

Around Pšovka there are side ravines and rock ridges stacked up, mainly around Kokořín Castle and the town of Mšena. The most valuable natural reserve is the Kokořínský důl. The interesting villages of Želízy, Tupadly, Chudolazy and Medonosy line the valley of Liběchovka.

There are several mines in the valleys of Liběchovka and Pšovka, as they say here a canyon-like valley between sandstone rocks, for example Zimořský důl, Truskavenský důl, Šemanovický důl, Sitenský důl, Vidimský důl, Hluboký důl and Střezivojický důl.

Nature from the Tertiary: sandstone mines and basalt mountains

In the Tertiary, in many places in Kokořínsk, volcanic igneous rocks (basalt, bells, trachytes) penetrated through the deposited layer of sandstone, which today manifests itself as the highest peaks - Vlhošť, Rač, Ronovy and others. Due to the action of wind and water erosion, the initially uniform sandstone sheet, then cracked by volcanic activity, was divided into deep gorges, ridges and plateaus. Erosion is still taking place mainly on the exposed sandstone towers.

Botanically, Kokořínsko is interesting mainly due to the inverted positions, where moisture-loving and submontane plants grow in the valleys, and heat-loving and dry-loving species thrive on the higher elevations. Wolves and ravens are slowly returning to the landscape. Several rare owls are known to nest.

Castles

Kokořín Castle stands on a sandstone promontory above the romantic Kokořín Mine. In addition to the castle itself, the charming view from the castle tower is also worth seeing.

Houska Castle is a castle building with a mysterious history and a mysterious chapel. Tours and special events increase the castle's attractiveness.

Starý Berštejn Castle on Berkovský vrch and Nový Berštejn Castle below look down on Duba. If you want to look at them, you must ask the private owners in advance.

The desolate castle is the barely noticeable remains of the rock castle above Zakšín.

The Ronov ruins stand on a separate hill, far from everywhere else.

Views

The lookout tower on Vrátenská hora provides a circular view from the Lužické mountains to Prague. From its walkway is one of the most beautiful views of Bezděz.

Nedvězí hill (458 m) also offers a circular view. But it won't take long and the top will be overgrown with bushes and trees. Hurry if you want to experience it in its full beauty.

Near Romanov, near the crossroads near Hájovna, you can visit the romantic viewpoint of Vrátenská hora and Housecké ridges.

The circular tourist sign surrounding Vlhošť (614 m) has several places from which views to the south, west and north gradually open up. It is forbidden to enter the top itself. Although there is no tourist sign leading there, tourists and trampers often break this ban.

Where to swim

The most popular, cleanest and coldest swimming is in the Harasov pond. If you don't have much time, you can swim right next to the road from the pond dam. Nicer swimming is on the other shore on a small sandy beach between the rocks. There is a large parking lot at Harasov. By the way: The incident from this pond inspired the folk song Krvomlýn. It turns, it turns, the wheels in the mill, the wheels turn, the water falls with a noise, I grind it, I show my back...

Mšeno Municipal Spa is a wonderful swimming pool with an old-world atmosphere.

Natural swimming and paid swimming pools are in the Holanské rybníky system.

You can enjoy a small but pleasant swim on the way at the swimming pool in Hleďseb u Lhotka.

Rocks that are worth seeing

Rock mazes are known for their narrow gorges near the crossroads near Hájovna.

Pokličky near Kokořín are bizarre rock formations wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, they look like mushrooms with a wide hat and a narrow leg. Below them is a small parking lot.

Čapská palice is a club-shaped rock on the Čap hill with a far-reaching view. Nearby you can admire the massive sandstone Martinská stěn.

Devils' heads and other giant sculptural works were carved into the rocks by Václav Levá in the forests around the village of Želízy.

Other separate rock formations to which hiking trails lead are, for example, the Goose, the Seven Loaves, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In Kokořínský mine, rocks are unfortunately destroyed with graffiti.

The Cinibulka trail passes through the most beautiful parts of the Kokořín mine from Romanov to Pokličky. It is named after the headmaster of the local school, who contributed the most to the promotion of Kokořínsk and its natural beauty.
