Garden shears are part of the basic equipment. Select them according to use

"There are either single-edged shears, which are mainly used for pruning dry branches due to their blade and bearing design, and double-edged shears for cutting live or fresh wood, herbs or flowers," explains Martin Chalupníček of Mountfield.

The cut of the double-edged scissors is very smooth and clean. They have to grind more often, but professional gardeners and florists usually prefer them.

Single-edged anvils are less susceptible to fine sand damage and are easier to grind. They have less cut cut and are used to remove entire branches. The anvil supports the branch throughout the cut, thus dissipating the pressure. They are also suitable for cutting other fibrous materials such as cords or coconut ropes and are minimally blunt.

It is better to take them in hand first

High-quality steel is generally used as secateurs, and the blades have recently been coated with a non-stick coating to better penetrate the wood.

For frequent cutting and cordless

Cordless technology has already penetrated the field of secateurs and is offered by all major manufacturers such as Makita or Bosch. In the first case as a professional expensive machine for winemakers or orchards, in the second case also as scissors for amateurs at a reasonable price.

It's similar to having better axes coated with Teflon or xylan so that the blades get stuck in the material better and you don't get so hard at work.

It is not very convenient for garden shears to buy them online. As with any tool the human hand works with, it is very important how the scissors fit into your hand. For a smaller woman's hand, therefore, and vice versa.

Therefore, it is always necessary to take the scissors in hand before buying and try to cut empty. If you place the open scissors on the palm of your hand, you should comfortably reach both shoulders with your thumb and fingers. However, some types of scissors allow the opening to be adjusted according to the size of the user's hand.

The shape of the handle and workmanship are also important. Your hands will be less tired from such scissors. Comfort is further enhanced by the soft and non-slip surface of the handle.

Classic or with transmission

Scissors can be either classic design or gear. The first group includes, for example, scissors with a finger guard, where, thanks to an interesting design, a firm grip is ensured - they do not slip out of the hand.

The second group is represented by scissors with a rotating handle. The ergonomic design ensures that the handle rolls naturally on the fingers when closing the palm. This movement is then transmitted via a gear to the upper blade. Both handles are parallel throughout the cutting process. This allows, unlike conventional scissors, to engage all fingers at once. The pressure is then distributed evenly. This design has a great effect on reducing hand fatigue.

However, this is not the only design of gear shears, almost every manufacturer offers its optimal mechanism. They can be single-edged or double-edged, they have in common that they can handle twigs with a larger diameter without having to put too much effort.

As with classic secateurs, garden ones can be bought for left-handers. They usually have slightly differently adjusted handles and a different position of the latch so that the left-handed user can reach it better.
