1. Carrots: basic

You will harvest the root, without which no good soup is complete, at the end of summer and especially in autumn.

Growing parsley is a higher gardening skill, so don't give up after initial failure. The seeds take a long time to germinate and need watering, so keep the soil moist. Sow parsley in March, at the latest at the beginning of April. The soil must be well dug and fertilized. Feel free to add compost, but leave out the manure for the same reason as with carrots.

Sow the parsley seeds about a centimeter deep. The distance between the rows should be around thirty centimeters. When the plants grow, don't forget to sort them, i.e. tear them so that there is at least seven centimeters between them, the only way the roots have a chance to grow stronger.

3. Onions: distinctive

Anyone who has ever eaten an onion from the garden knows that it has a completely different flavor and distinctive taste. Plus, growing onions is easy. It is another reason to find a place for her in the garden.

Onions will be grateful for loose, rather sandy soil and a sunny location. Grow it from cuttings, it's easier than from seeds. Use a planting stake to make holes about eight centimeters deep. Put the onions in them. The distance between the bulbs should be about ten centimeters. Growing onions will be facilitated by black garden fabric, which will attract the sun's rays and prevent the growth of weeds.

You don't have to take special care of onions. Water it only on steamy days when the soil is dry. But be careful with the dressing, otherwise the onion will rot.

4. Potatoes: universal

Potatoes are the basis of the menu, so they should not be missing even in the garden. You can grow at least a box of potatoes on a small piece of land. The basis of success is good seed potatoes, which you get in the garden. You can choose from early, mid-early or late varieties. You harvest early potatoes earlier and you can cook them straight away. Late potatoes are better for storage.

Potatoes will do best in looser and lighter soil. You can add compost. Manure is best buried in the fall, but if you missed it, you can also add a little horse or cow manure.

Plant the tubers about twenty to thirty centimeters apart. But not too deep. The depth should be a maximum of one to two centimeters greater than the height of the tuber. The distance between individual rows should be sixty-five to seventy centimeters so that the plants have enough space.

Beetroot is also a grateful crop. You can store it all winter, you can make a hearty soup from it, you can preserve it or add it to salads or you can prepare vegetarian carpaccio by cutting it into thin slices and drizzling with olive oil. In addition, it grows a little on its own.

You can sow beetroot from April to mid-June, so you can put it, for example, in the place where radishes or spring lettuce grew before. The advantage is that it is undemanding and will grow in almost any soil. You can enrich the beds with compost, but never add manure, beets do not like direct fertilization.

Sow the beetroot seeds about three centimeters deep. The distance between rows should be thirty centimeters and between plants about ten centimeters. Water the beets once or twice a week, hoe them occasionally. Otherwise, you don't have to worry about it. You can also harvest young leaves, which are wonderful for salad.
