Transport

The town of Zbiroh lies on the Prague - Beroun - Pilsen Railway Railway line - Plzeň.From the railway station in the duck it is six kilometers on the square.Another kilometer of walking uphill after the red or green trail leads us to the castle.You can also come to Zbiroha by car or bus on the highway.The parking lot is near the castle gate.

In 1469 a church curse was declared in the castle chapel on King George of Poděbrady.

In 1621, after the Battle of White Mountain, Czech gentlemen were imprisoned here, who later came to the Old Town Square for their heads.

The famous Czech families

Over the centuries, Zbiroh belonged to the most famous Czech families of the Drslavice, the Rosenbergs and the Kolowrats.After Kolowrats came the Sternbergs, Lobkowic and also Emperor Rudolf II himself.

The first written mention of the castle dates back to 1230.However, it is very likely that the stone castle Zbiroh stood around 1150 and maybe even before.The unusual guard tower type Bergfrit suggests.In this way it was built mainly in far Saxony.

The deepest and hardest well

In addition to the old tower is the largest attraction Zbiroha well.Its depth of 152 meters is one of the deepest medieval wells in Europe.It is driven in one of the toughest minerals of the bumper.

The reputation says it is connected by a secret corridor with a kilometer distant pond Flusár.Hydologists did not find the corridor but estimated that the waters of the pond and wells are connected.

And one more reputation to Zbiroh binds.It is one of the locations where the Amber Chamber could be hidden that the Germans stolen during World War II in Russia.

Modern history is varied

In 1868 Zbiroh was more of a castle than a defensive castle.At that time it was bought by the iron and railway entrepreneur Baron Bethel Henry Strousberg.It has been vigorously rebuilt during the 1869-70.The bailey was newly built in the Neo -Renaissance style of Berlin architect August Orth.

Baron Strousberg, however, soon went bankrupt and the castle was plundered by the creditor.Even some of its parts, such as orangery, were disassembled and taken away.

In 1879 an empty chateau was bought by the Colloredo-Mansfelds, in which it was held until 1945.However, they only lived here occasionally.On the other hand, the painter Alfons Mucha with his family inhabited the whole floor in the eastern wing between 1912 and 1928.In the Great Hall he painted the famous and controversial Slav Epic.

Between 1943 and 1945 the chateau was the seat of the staff of the German troops SS.After 1945, the Czechoslovak People's Army moved into it.Communist soldiers under the Soviet command left him only in 1991.He was then handed over to the town of Zbiroh and this sold it to the current owner of Gastro Žofin.
